Volunteers like you are at the heart of every Democratic campaign. Whether you're knocking doors, making calls, or stepping into a leadership role, your volunteer work directly shapes voter turnout and strengthens democracy. But successful campaigns don’t come together a few weeks before Election Day; they rely on volunteers who start early and with solid skills to contribute.
Thousands of campaign volunteers on winning races chose to train with NDTC. Our campaign training roadmap for 2026 shows you how to make an even bigger impact this cycle.
We've built our curriculum based on real-world campaign experience and best practices from candidates, campaign managers, and organizers across the country, ensuring that every resource is grounded in what actually works on the ground. Whether you're brand new to campaigning or you've been helping Democrats win for years, our training will help you develop the specific skills that campaign volunteers need most — from effective voter contact techniques to campaign messaging. By investing time in training early in the game, you'll be ready to hit the ground running when campaigns ramp up, and you'll have the confidence to take on greater responsibilities and maybe even mentor other volunteers along the way.
Why Year-Round Campaign Volunteer Training Matters
Critical elections happen every year, and you play an impactful role in each one. While national races dominate headlines, local elections determine school policies, public safety investments, housing decisions, and more. These smaller, less-funded races rely on volunteer support that much more.
Getting trained early will help you and your volunteer team gain confidence, understand campaign strategy, and become reliable leaders who help operations run smoothly.
Volunteers and NDTC’s Month-by-Month Campaign Training Roadmap
We've designed a strategic training roadmap for 2026 that develops the skills budding campaign volunteers need right as they’re needed.
Building Your Foundation. If you’re new to campaigning, you’ll learn how campaigns work, what roles volunteers play, and how you can make the biggest difference. Our campaign training helps you understand timelines, structures, and how volunteer teams fit into the greater effort.
Joining and Supporting the Campaign Team. Campaigns succeed because of volunteers who show up consistently and bring others with them. You’ll learn strategies for volunteer recruitment, supporting staff, communicating within teams, and taking on leadership roles such as shift lead or staging location captain.
Understanding the Campaign Message. Campaign volunteers often deliver the candidate’s message directly to voters. You’ll need to be prepared to share why the candidate is running, how to talk about issues that matter to your community, and how to connect with voters authentically at the door or on the phone. We’ll help you rehearse talking points and communicate them organically.
Fundraising Skills for Campaign Volunteers. You don’t need to be a seasoned fundraiser to help a campaign raise money; like anything else, you just need practice. We cover how you and your fellow volunteers can host successful fundraising parties, make the asks, and contribute to a healthy fundraising culture.
Engaging Voters Online. In today’s digital landscape, volunteers help campaigns reach people through social media, personal networks, and online organizing. You can help take your campaign to the next level by learning how to share messages effectively, boost content, and track engagement in ways that support the campaign’s road to victory.
Field Organizing & Voter Contact. This is where campaign volunteers get to shine. Our field trainings cover canvassing, phone banking, relational organizing, and youth outreach best practices. You’ll become a strong, confident advocate for your candidate in conversations that move voters.
Getting Out The Vote. The final stretch is when volunteer power matters most. Our training includes GOTV scripts, how to manage high-volume shifts, and how to stay organized when urgency is at its peak and winning is right around the corner.
Navigating the Post-Election Phase. After Election Day, volunteers provide critical feedback in campaign debriefs and document lessons learned. Their input is uniquely valuable and distinct from the staff’s, because they worked closely with the campaign team while maintaining an outside perspective that staff may lack. NTDC’s training supports campaign volunteers to reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and to prepare for future cycles.
